I'm having trouble finding fresh St. John's wort. I'd love a plant of my own (or two or three) to love on, but even just some fresh plant matter would be fabulous.

But, I've had no luck. I take St. John's Wort tincture for depression (along with good diet and exercise and spiritual work) and it is expensive! I'd like to make my own. Would I need to adjust my dosage if I made the tincture out of dried plant instead of fresh? Would I be wasting my time to do so?

I find the fresh tincture to be effective. You can order some seeds and plant some in your garden for next season if you can't find it wild. Here in the Northwest it's rampant!

Jo, if you're now in Michigan and not in Wales any more, take a look at Jim Macdonald's website. He lists all the local herbsellers in Michigan. http://www.herbcraft.org/links.html#Live%20in%20Michigan

I've been using dried from Mountain Rose Herbs to make mine with whiskey and it works great!

Luckily, I met a new herb-y friend who not only showed me how to identify it but showed me her best picking spot and now I have a quart jar full of fresh(ish) herb and vodka. I know it's not the best time of year to pick it, but we managed to find enough that wasn't all the way gone and just the experience of picking it myself helped loads with making the medicine effecient I'm sure.

Thanks y'all!
