Oh, yes, I've had those experiences too. It's wonderful when you can connect with people of different backgrounds in such meaningful ways.

For me, it's not really worrying about what people will think of me; I'm very comfortable with who I am. It's more based on relationships with people and respecting where they are at, some I barely know and others I have known my whole life. It's a dance. And when I realize people don't want to go in certain directions I back off. And when I see that they don't understand or can't relate to certain words and metaphors I may be using, I choose different ones. I don't want to make my own spiritual or cultural paradigms a hindrance to our relationship and overall communication.

I understand what you are saying now. Thanks for clarifying.

Linda,
When I read this thread, I heard you. I didn't feel like the people who were doing something different from what you were doing were better than you or anything of that nature at all. I felt glad to hear about a variety of different responses, each one representing the unique truth of that person's circumstance.

I appreciate that you said you heard me. And I have to say the quote from your reply is really confusing for me. What are you trying to say and who are you referring to? My comments were about my own frustration about not feeling heard, not about whether anyone is or is not better than myself. Can you clarify?
Blessings

Hi Linda,

The whole "better than" language is mine, I have to acknowledge that. I just wanted to affirm that I recieved your point. I think others may have too, even if they didn't respond directly or did different things themselves.

I appreciate your desire to be respectful. I also feel sad, because I would not hesitate to suggest Weeds Heal to people in my community. Even if I perceived that they had a spiritual belief which I thought did not match one of a new age bent. The book is not focused on Chakras, they are only one small component. And to rob people of the opportunity to explore something new seems presumptious to me. I choose not to make those choices for people.

I do think that giving people a forwarning if you do have a concern could be valid. And just like components of herbalism have become "new agey" ie some folks are calling themselves "Shamanic Herbalists", herbalism itself is ancient. As is the concept of Chakras. So different language and more specifics would probabaly feel better to me. Perhaps saying that this book contains information about chakras, which is an ancient east indian tradition focuing on energy centers connecting mind, body and spirit. Just one possibility.

And honestly, when I talk to people about spirit I suggest to them that they can overlay what their belief systems are. I try to offer terms that assist in keeping an open mind. I usually say to people; spirit, god, goddes, univeral energy, whatever it is you choose to call it...... I do not want to ignore this aspect of healing work regardless of who I am talking to. I don't hide my own path, but I open up and leave room for others paths as well as for all of us to open to new possibilites at any moment.

I also know that food and herbs can be uniting and offer us all the opportunity to get to know each other's paths-so that we fear them less.

Anyway, I am curious to hear your thoughts on this as well as others.

It may be a little rude or maybe not quite what people have in mind, but isn't it just a little odd to be trying to find something that works across the board, when one of the traits of herbalism is to treat people as individuals?

Maybe there is no way to avoid offending everyone, but if you look at your words and your choices in recommendations the way you'd look at your tinctures and infusions- it makes sense to choose the words that are best for the individual or individuals you're speaking to.

I'm sorry if someone else has already brought this up.
