Hmmm. I just noticed that traditionalmedicines.info isn't working. I'll send some email out and see if I can figure out what's going on. _________________ Rebecca Hartman

An update: I have word that Voices for Traditional Medicine is working on a new website that will address some of the larger issues surrounding the TMC. I'll post here again when the website is up. _________________ Rebecca Hartman

| The site http://www.traditionalmedicines.info/ is up. Can anyone help me here. They claim that the TMC will take away access to herbs. The TMC claims they have no intention to change DSHEA and that many of the same herbs would be sold in both systems. I know that AHPA's support was contingent upon no changes to DSHEA. I emailed 'traditional medicines' and aksed how they reconcile their statement that the TMC will undermine DSHEA with the TMC stated goal of not changing DSHEA. They have not responded. Does anyone know where the 'undermine DSHEA' opinion comes from? |

I think it is a fear that if another system did exist, it would be easier to undermine DSHEA in the future. (Of course, considerations of DSHEA are different now because of the GMPs.)
Does anyone know if anything is actually happening with the TMC anymore?
I notice that the traditionalmedicines.info site includes a rather outdated list of TMC members. I wonder when it was last updated. _________________ Rebecca Hartman

Voices for Traditional Herbal Medicine traditionalmedicines.info is updating its info.
The American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) dropped out of the TMC a long time ago, and at our request this month the TMC updated their sponsor list to reflect the Naturopaths departure from the TMC. We do not know why they waited so long to inform the public of this. The TMC also only updated their sponsor list to reflect the American Herbalist Guild's departure from the TMC until we requested that they do so.
Michael McGuffin received a statement of continued support for future involvement of AHPA in the TMC- that was, I think, before the GMP was published in the Federal register.
McGuffin told us that as of this month "There has been no effort since the close of the comment period on the first draft to develop a second draft and no schedule has been established by the TM Congress for any such effort."
Individual members who have served on the board of the TMC have told us that the group is no longer active, and that the TMC is a moot point now that the GMP has been issued.

That's an interesting position. My understanding of the TMC effort was to gain medical standing and be able to make medicinal claims for products. DSHEA does not offer that, GMPs or no GMPs.
Anyway, i like moot, that's easy. |

Hi Julie.
DSHEA is the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act -- it governs the sale of "dietary supplements" in the US, which includes herbal products.
GMPs are Good Manufacturing Practices -- these just came out recently, and they require a huge amount of paperwork and testing for dietary supplements before they can be sold. (There's more in the "GMPs" thread.) _________________ Rebecca Hartman
